Cute and Cuter

November 15, 2011

Announcing a new sporadic series to the blog, a kind of sibling series to “Separated at birth?“.

In this series, I take some RTW garment that grabbed my attention and try to imagine how much cuter it would be if it was made to your specifications and taste, in a fiber of your choosing. If you are a vicarious shopper and an eco-conscious frugal would-be fashionista like me you should enjoy this series.

Cute is the Heart me sweater from j.crew in a wool/nylon/cashmere blend (I’d be amazed if the cashmere content exceeds 5%). $88.

But cuter still is the Brighton sweater by designers Antoni & Alison from Rown magazine 47.

Brighton was designed for a fingering weight cotton but could be adapted to a larger gauge. Just look at the drool worthy version from Ravelry’s knit-knat.

Interestingly, if you purchased the designated yarn (Rowan fine milk cotton) at full retail price you would be shelling out something in the order of the j.crew sweater. Obviously you could make this sweater with more inexpensive yarns but the point I want to make is that at these kinds of prices, the fraction of the cost of the j.crew sweater that pays the labor needed to create the sweater must surely be very marginal.
